Unfounded Objects

MONTE CLARK
Unfounded Objects explores an unwavering experimental freedom - one that is as intuitive as it is conceptual, ultimately revealing deeper truths about ourselves. Through his visual use of language Gillmore shows us that communication can both connect and distance us at the same time. Unfounded Objects shifts from the colourful oil on panel paintings he is known for, showcasing different mediums.
Seen in the oil stick on canvas paintings, language, humour and emotional difficulty take center stage. Characteristic ‘thought-bubbles’ and a softer colour palette create a paradox between form and the signifiaction of words. Gillmore’s monochromatic reliefs comprised of 3D letters and gesso, emphasize both a visual and verbal significance. White paint unifies the pictorial field, while shadows created by the letters reveal the tension between flatness and depth. Constructed out of unconventional materials are five sculptures that explore corporeal form in space. Predominantly white, dashes of colour help to calrify their complex physiologies. One is reminded of the transparent pages of anatomy books which reveals circulatory, nervous and digestive systems. Their fluid compositions reflect those found in his paintings, like streams that connect substance or thoughts.
Unfounded Objects examines conflicting sources of meaning and knowledge, science and religion, hope and doubt as well as personal and universal human experience.
